ISRO is set to launch the NVS-03 satellite on October 30 at 11:51 pm, as part of efforts to strengthen India’s indigenous navigation system, NavIC. The satellite will be placed into orbit using the GSLV-F18 rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.

According to ISRO, the mission is aimed at addressing shortcomings in the NavIC network and restoring precise location-based services. NavIC was developed as an alternative to the US GPS system.

NVS-03 carries an advanced rubidium atomic clock that has been developed indigenously by ISRO’s centre in Ahmedabad. Such onboard timing systems are critical for accurate navigation and positioning.

Weighing 2,232 kg, the satellite is designed for a mission life of 12 years. ISRO said it will support civilian positioning services as well as applications in disaster management, railway transportation and defence-related security needs.

ISRO added that all preparations for the launch are in place.
