Tamil Nadu has implemented a revised fare structure for auto-rickshaws from Tuesday, marking the first major revision in 13 years. The Transport Commissionerate has directed that the meters fitted in autos across the state be recalibrated within the next six months.
Under the new tariff, the minimum fare is fixed at Rs 50 for the first 1.8 km. For every additional kilometre, the fare has been set at Rs 25.
Auto unions have welcomed the revision while placing a few demands. All Auto Unions Federation coordinator Balasubramaniam said the government could have consulted unions before announcing the meter fare, and urged the launch of a government auto app, formation of a tripartite committee, and a Rs 5,000 festival bonus for drivers through the welfare board.
Rights Voice Drivers Union executive president Jahir Hussain thanked the Transport Department for the hike and called for special camps at Regional Transport Offices to facilitate meter recalibration.
Transport Commissionerate officials said drivers must follow the new fare immediately and recalibrate their meters within six months. Until then, drivers have been asked to download the fare chart from the transport department website and keep it in the vehicle for public viewing. The QR code on the chart can be scanned to verify authenticity, and complaints about overcharging can be made on 1800 425 5430.
