The United States is holding its midterm elections, which take place two years after a president assumes office. Voting was held for 35 of the 100 Senate seats, and polling has concluded in two states. Early leads and results from these states show the opposition Democratic Party ahead.

In Virginia, Democrat Mark Warner was re-elected to the Senate. In Florida’s 20th Congressional District, Democrat Debbie Wasserman Schultz won again. Voting will conclude in the remaining states in stages, after which counting will begin.

Astronauts also took part in the election from space. Three NASA astronauts aboard the International Space Station, which orbits more than 400 km above Earth, cast their votes, including Anil Menon. He shared a video online to raise awareness about how astronauts living in space can exercise their right to vote.

In his post, Menon said it was a privilege to vote from the space station, and that the crew completed electronic ballots and securely sent them to election officials. He said fellow NASA astronauts Luke Delaney and Jessica Watkins also completed and securely submitted their electronic ballots.

Separately, President Donald Trump wrote on social media that Fox News ratings have dropped sharply (27%), and claimed his own ratings are better than ever. Citing a new CNN poll, he said he has 99% support among Republicans and 53% among Republican presidents. He blamed Fox News for the decline, saying the network was against him.
